Carlin’s Zak O’Sullivan will enjoy a two day FIA Formula 3 test in Valencia next month, his prize for winning the 2021 GB3 Championship in association with the BRDC.
The 16-year-old proved the dominant driver of the season, taking seven wins and seven additional podiums on the way to the title, while also topping every other statistic of note, including the most pole positions, fastest laps and laps led.
He ultimately claimed the title 164 points clear of his nearest opposition, the joint-biggest winning margin since the introduction of the Tatuus chassis in 2016.
He’s now preparing for his first taste of FIA F3 machinery in just a couple of weeks’ time, with a car that has 150 extra horsepower and top speeds of over 185mph.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” he commented. “It’s a really cool car and it will be good to get out to Valencia and be on track with some of the European drivers and on the FIA stage. It’ll be great to be with the boys and girls in blue again, I’ve had two great years with them so it’ll be great to do the test with them.”
O’Sullivan will use the test to evaluate his options for next year, as he aims to follow in the footsteps of Carlin’s two most recent champions Clement Novalak and Kaylen Frederick, who jumped from GB3’s predecessor BRDC British F3 straight into FIA F3.
“FIA F3 is the logical step for me next year, GB3 and the car especially has prepared me well. Obviously, we run similar Pirelli tyres and there’s a lot of aero on the car, so it’s set me up well. And next year’s car looks like it’ll be even better preparation for those drivers looking to make the next step up!”
