Race 2: O’Sullivan splashes to superb victory to secure Carlin’s Team Championship

Sunday 17 October 2021

Newly-crowned GB3 champion Zak O’Sullivan dominated the second race of the weekend at Donington Park, splashing his way to a commanding victory from third on the grid.

The race started behind the safety car owing to the soaking wet conditions, but when it pitted at the end of lap two, O’Sullivan was immediately on a charge, picking off Bart Horsten through the Craner Curves, and caught and passed Reece Ushijima at Goddards, before marching into the distance.

His lead after just one racing lap was over three seconds, and the 16-year-old continued to stretch his lead with ease, winning by over seven seconds from pole sitter Ushijima, to also wrap up the Team’s Championship for Carlin.

Ushijima claimed his second successive second place for Hitech GP, finishing three seconds clear of O’Sullivan’s teammate Christian Mansell.

Mansell started sixth, gained a place on the first lap of racing, and had climbed to fourth by the mid-point. He then began to apply big pressure to fellow Aussie Bart Horsten, and when the Hitech driver made the slightest of mistakes on the run up to Coppice, he slipped through into third place, massively aiding his bid for second place in the drivers’ championship.

Horsten had to settle for fourth, a long way clear of Chris Dittmann Racing’s Ayrton Simmons, another driver with aspirations for second place. Simmons was embroiled in a thrilling scrap with Arden’s Roman Bilinski, and eventually made a move stick around the outside of the Polish driver at Coppice corner, with plenty of opposite lock applied.

Bilinski was sixth, less than a second ahead of Carlin’s Bryce Aron, while Branden Oxley backed up his best result yesterday with eighth this morning for Chris Dittmann Racing.

Sebastian Alvarez’s Hitech machine was also involved in the scrap with Simmons and Bilinski at one stage, but fell to ninth, with Fortec’s Roberto Faria 10th, and harming his chances of taking second in the championship.

The final race of the season, the full reverse-grid contest is due to commence at 16.00 local time, with live streaming available on the GB3 Championship website, as well as being shown on the Sky Sports F1 Channel.
