Champion Zak O’Sullivan delivered a champion’s drive in a wet second race at Donington Park this morning. He finished well clear of Hitech’s Reece Ushijima with Carlin teammate Christian Mansell taking third to secure Carlin the Teams’ Championship. Here’s how each driver reacted at the end of the event.

Winner, Zak O’Sullivan, Carlin:
“That was an awesome race, I managed to clear the two Hitech cars pretty early on. I focused on working the front tyres really hard on the out laps, and yeah, I got past them early on and was able to pull out a big gap almost straight away. I felt as if I didn’t have too much grip but obviously everyone else was struggling slightly more. I was managing the race through the mid phase, and pushed a bit more towards the end to see what we had left. Obviously we’ve clinched the team’s championship as well, so it’s an awesome job, Carlin have done awesome all year and hopefully we can get a 1-2 in the driver’s championship as well.

“The car has been strong all year in the wet, and I think Hitech have maybe slightly struggled, so we felt pretty confident going into the race, but I didn’t think to that extent.

“Hopefully it stays wet for race three to give me more of a chance, or perhaps some mixed conditions where you can gamble on slick tyres would be awesome. It’s been a great season and hopefully we will end it on a high.”

Second, Reece Ushijima, Hitech GP:
“It’s been really good so far. I would have liked the win but I know my championship fight isn’t with Zak, so it was still a good amount of points, and I’m still fighting for second in the championship.

“I struggled to get a bit of temperature in the tyres at the start and Zak managed to start really well, so he got past. From then on it was just about management, trying to stay in the position and luckily I managed to finish in P2.

“I think race three will be really fun, I think it will be good for the fans on Sky F1 as well. If it stays like this it will be really exciting.”

Third, Christian Mansell, Carlin:
“What a race, I mean rain is always a leveller and I really enjoy driving in the rain so I’m blessed to be here and drive at probably one of my favourite tracks and my favourite conditions. So I was really looking forward to this one and it’s paid heavily.

“I’m always trying to look for areas where people are weaker and obviously turn eight was the weak spot for him [Horsten]. Lo and behold he made that mistake, obviously it could have been a mistake under pressure which is understandable when you’ve got a car coming at such fast pace behind you. But either way, I took advantage of that fully and I’m standing here on the podium.

“P2 is now very close so race three is going to come down to the wire big time!”
