GB3 Championship in association with BRDC racer Ayrton Simmons will make his debut in the FIA Formula 3 Championship this weekend (24-26 September), after signing up to race for Charouz Racing System for the final event of the season in Sochi, Russia.
The nine-time GB3 race winner will line up alongside Logan Sargeant and Zdenek Chovanec for the triple-header, stepping in to replace Hunter Yeany who is unable to contest the event.
Simmons is making his FIA F3 debut amidst a strong domestic campaign, during which he’s won four GB3 races with Chris Dittmann Racing. As a result, the Brit is second in the GB3 standings, behind only Zak O’Sullivan, with just a trio of races at Donington Park to come in October.
Simmons will make his FIA F3 debut in a Friday practice session ahead of qualifying later that afternoon. There will then be two races on Saturday ahead of a final race on Sunday ahead of the Russian Grand Prix.
Simmons said: “I’m really looking forward to racing with Charouz Racing System. I want to thank the team and also my sponsors for giving me this opportunity getting me to Sochi. I’ve never driven the car before and never driven with Pirelli tyres so it’s probably going to be difficult at first to get used to everything having limited track time, but we’ll try to learn as much as possible, and I’ll make sure I’ll be as well-prepared as I can to deliver the best possible result.”
