Carlin’s Zak O’Sullivan very nearly claimed the GB3 Championship title at Oulton Park, and while he fell just short of claiming the overall crown, he did take over at the top of the Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup.

O’Sullivan dominated qualifying in Cheshire to claim pole position for races one and two, the first of which he converted to a superb victory, and was challenging for the win again in race two before crashing out.

The 16-year-old now has four pole positions to his name after his other double at Donington earlier in the season, one more than any other driver.

Ayrton Simmons has three poles to his name, while Reece Ushijima, Bart Horsten and Oliver Bearman each have two, and Sebastian Alvarez has one.

Any of the first five drivers in the Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup can still take the end of year £1,000 prize, with two more pole positions up for grabs at the final event at Donington Park. A tie-break situation will come into force should the winning driver be tied on poles with another competitor.

The Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup initiative has been running since the inaugural BRDC F4 season in 2013, and has continued through the series’ transition into BRDC British F3 and then GB3, with in excess of £30,000 awarded to drivers during the past eight seasons.

The award is named after Jack Cavill, who played a vital supporting role in the early careers of several notable drivers from the 1960s onwards. The driver with the most pole positions each season wins a trophy and a cheque for £1,000. £200 cash prizes and a trophy are awarded to drivers who secure poles for races one and two each weekend, with prizes presented by Jack’s son John Cavill, who has been a major supporter of the championship since 2013.

Previous winners of the award include Jake Hughes, George Russell, Will Palmer, Ricky Collard, Enaam Ahmed, Linus Lundqvist, Jonathan Hoggard and Kaylen Frederick.
