11 / 12 September
Zak O’Sullivan, Luke Browning and Ayrton Simmons were the top-three finishers in the first GB3 Championship race of the weekend at Oulton Park. Here’s how each reacted at the end of the race.
Winner, Zak O’Sullivan, Carlin:
“I haven’t quite done the maths but a win is a win and I’m going to be extending the gap over everyone if I win. So it’s good to get the win, I’ll put my focus onto winning tomorrow’s race and a good weekend rather than winning the championship. The car was awesome, I managed to pull the gap slightly later on in the race. I think from lap three onwards we had a bit of a tyre advantage and really stretched the gap. The car’s been handling great all weekend and I think that really showed there.
“Luke seemed to be able to switch the tyres on a little bit faster, I had a bit of wheelspin at the start and was slightly on the back foot for the first sector. But then even early on when he was quite close it was under control, it’s so hard to overtake here, if you’re leading and don’t make any mistakes you’re pretty much guaranteed a win. But it was good to extend that gap towards the end which was a bonus.
“Hopefully we can do the same again tomorrow, perhaps with a better start. The pace has been great here today so I can’t see why it won’t be tomorrow.”
Second, Luke Browning, Fortec Motorsports:
“A good welcome home I guess! We wanted to get Zak at the start but it didn’t quite work out and then it is what it was from then. The pace wasn’t bad but we just struggled a bit towards the end but it’s something I can work on back in the workshop.
“Once you get in that dirty air and overuse your tyres a bit it’s very hard to be consistent at the end of the race. That was our game plan really, to pass him at the start and I don’t think he’d have been able to get past me, it would have been a reverse of what we’ve just seen, but in my favour. These things happen, but not a bad debut.
“Hopefully tomorrow we’ll be challenging into turn one and two again!”
Third, Ayrton Simmons, Chris Dittmann Racing:
“I got quite a good start but unfortunately I couldn’t get past anyone into turn one. We know how hard it is to overtake around here, but the pace was really good, we put Luke under pressure towards the end. But I’m happy with the driving and our performance. Just a bit unfortunate with qualifying but third place is not bad.
“I think I was ahead of Luke but the way Zak was defending his line I was boxed in behind him. Luke took the line around the outside and carried a lot more speed, so there wasn’t much I could do there, but it was a good race.
“We’ll see how we end up tomorrow, I’ll try and get as many positions as possible tomorrow. It’s very hard to overtake here but we’ll give it our best like always.”
