All aboard the Tommy Express! Smith hits a different kind of track in Australia

Douglas Motorsport’s Tommy Smith has already claimed a GB3 podium this season, and now the Aussie seems to be on track for stardom in his homeland after having a train named after him.

The 19-year-old has been honoured by his headline partner SCT Logistics, which has christened one of its locomotives as the “Tommy Express”, with the train set to travel across the width of the country featuring a cartoon image of the youngster in his blue and white Douglas Motorsport GB3 car.

The Australian interstate transport company have been loyal backers of Smith since his car-racing career began back in 2018, with their latest show of support for the Melbourne racer coming just weeks after his Oulton Park podium.

Smith’s next destination is Donington Park this weekend, where he will be expecting his upgraded Tatuus MSV-022 GB3 car to be on rails.

He said: “The SCT history is a great Australian story, being the first private rail operator in Australia and operating the largest freight trains in Australia across the longest single rail line in the world – 3,500 kilometres from the east coast to the west coast of Australia. SCT set the benchmark in innovation and I’m both proud and thankful for their support and this tribute.”

SCT’s Sales Director Pat Kerin has seen all the signals to suggest Smith is building a strong platform for his motorsport career.

He added: “We are so happy to be continuing this relationship with Tommy, he is a fine young man with a great future in motorsport. Locomotive number 16 “Tommy Express” will now be a special addition to our fleet of more than 40 locomotives which service our business across Australia.

“We wish Tommy all the best with his motor racing endeavours and we look forward to supporting him into the future.”

Should the schedule run on time this weekend, Smith will be on track at 11.40 on Saturday for qualifying, with the first race due off at 15.35. Two further contests are timetabled for Sunday at 10.07 and 16.47.
