Granfors satisfied after “positive” FIA F3 test

28 September 2022

Joel Granfors may be in the middle of an intense GB3 title fight with Luke Browning, but the Swede also has one eye on the future, following a “positive” FIA Formula Three test with Carlin at Jerez last week.

Running with the team across all three days of the official test, Granfors made a strong impression in his first ever experience of the next level up the ladder, showing strong pace throughout.

In all, he completed 223 laps of the Spanish venue, and was the fastest driver in Carlin’s line-up, which also included FIA F3 regular Hunter Yeany, and Formula Regional front-runner Hadrien David. His best time of the test was only a second away from the quickest time across the three days.

“It was a positive test, and I learned a lot,” Granfors said. “The F3 car requires a different driving style to what I’m used to in GB3. You really have to look after the tyres here, but I think I got the hang of it relatively quickly. It’s been constant progress and we had a very strong race run to cap it off.

“It was a great experience, working with the Carlin guys as well, and just getting a feel for the championship and paddock. I definitely enjoyed it.”

Last week’s test may not be Granfors’ final experience of FIA F3 machinery in the coming months either, as the winner of the GB3 Championship receives a prize test in the car with Carlin and Hitech GP. Granfors is just 16.5-points behind leader Luke Browning after a season-long tussle between the pair.
