What they said: Donington Decider race one

15 October 2022

Carlin's Callum Voisin, Hitech GP's Luke Browning and Elite's John Bennett were the podium finishers in the first race of the Donington Decider weekend. Here's how each driver reacted afterwards.

Winner, Callum Voisin, Carlin:
"The perfect way to end Saturday, a double pole, another race win under my belt. I couldn’t be happier.

"The main thing is getting a good start which I did this time which is good. Tom (Lebbon) behind me was extremely quick, it was very hard to keep him behind, I thought midway through I had a nice rhythm and a nice gap but then the Safety Car came out and that undid everything I’d worked for. But anyway, it was a really good race, towards the end I made a little bit of a mistake and the tyres started to drop off which is why Tom got a little bit closer at the end but I managed to hold on."

Second, Luke Browning, Hitech GP:
"I'm happy to come away P2. I got a mega start, it was so close going up to turn one, I thought we were going to have a three car collision at some point so I backed out and didn’t get the move, but I managed to get John a little bit later on in the race. It was a solid race and great racecraft from the guys not to have any crashes out there.

"We’ve had this conversation over and over back at Hitech and if you and try and be conservative and if you don’t go for the move, if you don’t drive natural things will just go against you, you’ll cause more crashes, you do unpredictable things that other drivers won’t expect. So the pep talk before we came out was just send it, see where you end up.

"I’ll keep my head down, hopefully have another good start in race two, I don’t think it’ll be the end of the world if I followed Joel round tomorrow. Of course I want to overtake him."

Third, John Bennett, Elite Motorsport:
"We finally got it, starting third again tomorrow so there’s hopefully another chance. A good race, third at the start, lost it after the safety car restart, I was in the wrong gear, bogged in second but fair play to Luke, it was a good move.

"We were strong throughout the race, not the best way to get it with my teammate getting a penalty but we’ll take it. Luke’s move was off track but we’ll have to see what the stewards say. I think it was a good move, I gave him space and he gave me space.

"Hopefully we can go one better tomorrow. Race starts have been good the past couple of rounds, today again gaining one off the start. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, a really good result for the team, we’ve been really good this week. Second and fourth in quali and in testing on Thursday I was fastest and Tom was on Friday. Thanks to the team for such a good car."
