Hitech GP celebrate first GB3 team’s title triumph

17 October 2022

In their third season in the championship, Hitech GP were crowned GB3 Team’s Champions after the final three races of the season at Donington Park.

The Silverstone-based squad, headed by former racer Oli Oakes have come close before, but this year they won more races than any other squad, with seven.

Driver’s champion Luke Browning won five on the way to his title, but there were also triumphs at Silverstone and Donington Park for Cian Shields and Bryce Aron respectively.

The race for the team’s crown was only decided in the final race of the year, and Hitech had to overcome a 16-point deficit to Carlin to take the title, thanks to Shields’ second place and Browning’s surge up the order to seventh from 16th on the grid. Hitech won the title by just 11 points, with an end total of 805.5.

Their chances had been further enhanced earlier in the weekend, with Aron enjoying his best event of the season with his largest points haul of the year. A personal best qualifying performance with third on the grid led to big points in the first race before taking his third podium of the campaign in race two.

With Browning's double podium, and Shields also on the rostrum during the event, the 135 points scored by the squad proved pivotal to the team's end of year success.

“It’s been a really good day, but a bit of a surprise!” Team Manager Phil Blow commented at the end of the season.

“I feel a bit for the Carlin boys, but you have to take it when it comes. It’s fantastic, the amount of work that the team has put in is brilliant.

“The guys haven’t stopped, with these new cars, they’re so much quicker, and the guys everywhere in the team just don’t stop. It’s brilliant to win this, it’s so good. We’ve been together for quite a while, and it’s great to end the season in this way.”
