Voisin victorious in curtailed Spa race three

24 July 2022

Carlin’s Callum Voisin claimed his third victory of the season in a heavily disrupted final GB3 Championship race of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.

The race was held in two parts, with the first red flagged on the third lap when David Morales had a heavy accident at Blanchimont. The American driver was able to extract himself from the car but appeared shaken when medical staff arrived at the scene and was taken to hospital for further checks and observations, but is conscious and alert.

After a delay, the race was completely restarted under the safety car with the grid formed by the running order at the red flag. Douglas Motorsport’s Tommy Smith led the field away, having taken the lead in the first half.

Voisin, from third on the revised grid, passed front row starter and original pole sitter Zak Taylor at Les Combes on the restart lap, and then fought his way past Smith on the approach to Blanchimont just as Fortec’s Mikkel Grundtvig beeched himself into the gravel at Campus.

With the Dane stranded, the safety car was deployed and though it was able to pit with time remaining in the race, by the time Voisin reached the line, the chequered flag was showing.

That meant Voisin claimed one of the more unusual wins of his career from Smith, with Carlin teammate Roberto Faria ending a difficult weekend with the final place on the podium.

Taylor was shuffled down to fourth at the end of the three lap contest, ahead of Hillspeed’s Nick Gilkes in fifth and Arden’s Alex Connor in sixth.

Marcos Flack was seventh for Douglas Motorsport ahead of JHR’s Matthew Rees, who climbed from 14th on the grid to eighth at the chequered flag.

Max Esterson stormed from 20th on the grid up to ninth, while Chris Dittmann Racing’s Branden Oxley too made good progress as he shot from 16th to complete the top-10.

Double Spa winner Luke Browning found his way from 22nd and last on the original grid to 11th, while title challenger Joel Granfors made big gains from 21st up to 12th.
