What they said: Silverstone qualifying

29 July 2023

Matthew Rees, McKenzy Cresswell and Tymek Kucharczyk were the fastest three drivers in qualifying at Silverstone. Here's how each driver reacted after the session.

Double pole, Matthew Rees, JHR Developments:
"It's a good birthday weekend, I can't complain so far! I had a good car in the end, we were struggling with balance on Friday, a bit of over-rotation. But dialling that out, we were able to maximise the car and the car just gripped on entry. I think that's what has helped us today, we might need to change the balance a bit for the race but we're looking strong and I can't complain about it, so I'll take it.

"Don't remind me about the last Silverstone, that was pain! Hopefully we can win again, minus the jump start this time. We'll see what we can do, I'm in a happy place, and we look strong. The racing is very good on the first few laps but then it settles down and it dies down a bit, so hopefully we can get through the first few laps in a good place and see what we can do from there."

Second, McKenzy Cresswell, Elite Motorsport:
"It was very close, I didn't quite maximise my final lap. I was purple in sector one but couldn't quite keep the tyres alive for the rest of the lap. It's a bit frustrating because I wanted pole, that's what I'm here for, but P2 is still a good starting spot and I can definitely fight from there.

"I'm going to be hoping to get away well off the line and hopefully get a win in race one. It's possible to overtake around here and we've got a lot to fight for."

Third, Tymek Kucharczyk, Douglas Motorsport:
"It wasn't too clean really, if I'd put the first sector together on my best lap I think the pole was there. So I think it was possible, just not a clean lap, but I think it's still a pretty good result.

"If we get a good start we can still fight for the win on the Hangar Straight maybe, I'll do my best of course. We are hungry for the win!"
