Rodin Carlin’s Callum Voisin claimed his first two pole positions of the 2023 GB3 Championship season in qualifying at Spa-Francorchamps this afternoon.
The British-Swiss contender usurped long-time pace-setter McKenzy Cresswell with six minutes remaining, and set two laps faster than anyone else, thus securing pole for race two also.
Voisin’s best time of 2m14.912s was seven tenths of a second faster than last year’s pole position time, and 0.127s faster than Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Alex Dunne, who recorded his best qualifying result of the season with second.
Elite’s Cresswell had to settle for third, 0.020s away from Dunne though he was on course for a much improved lap time when the red flags flew to recover the stranded car of Arthur Rogeon on the Kemmel Straight, and with just two minutes on the clock, there wasn’t enough time to restart the session.
Douglas Motorsport’s Tymek Kucharczyk posted the fourth fastest time, two tenths of a second away from Cresswell and 0.143s clear of the lead JHR Developments car of David Morales.
Morales’ teammate Matthew Rees was just six thousandths of a second further back, and 0.020s ahead of Arden VRD’s Nico Christodoulou in seventh.
Fortec Motorsport’s Max Esterson claimed eighth on the grid for race one, 0.025s away from his fellow North American and 0.013s clear of Hillspeed’s Gerrard Xie, who enjoyed his best qualifying result of the season with ninth.
Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Michael Shin completed the top-10, which was covered by 0.745s.
Championship leader Joseph Loake was 14th fastest, and the final driver within a second of the pole position time around the longest circuit of the year.
On the second fastest times classification for the race two grid, Voisin was 0.038s clear of Dunne, with Cresswell third again.
Rees and Christodoulou were fourth and fifth with an identical lap time, with Esterson and Kucharczyk next up.
Xie, Loake and Fortec’s Edward Pearson completed the top-10 on the second fastest times classification.
Two GB3 races will take place at Spa-Francorchamps tomorrow (Saturday) with the first due to commence at 11.56 local time (10.56 GMT), with all racing this weekend to be live streamed as usual.
