Callum Voisin, Alex Dunne and McKenzy Cresswell were the fastest three drivers in qualifying at Spa-Francorchamps. Here’s how each contender reacted after the session.
Pole position, Callum Voisin, Rodin Carlin:
“This feels amazing, it’s a really competitive grid and it’s tough to get pole positions this year. To do it at a track like Spa couldn’t be any better really. Especially as it’s a bit of redemption from last year, we didn’t have a great qualifying at all, so to come back here and grab double pole is unexpected but a brilliant result.
“The guys have worked flat out and I can’t thank them enough. We have just got better and better with every session and really happy to come out on top. I don’t really know what happened with the red flag so there was a little bit of luck on my side but either way I think we would have been on for a very good position, and I’m over the moon.
“We’ll see what we can do, either way we need to bag some points and see where we end up. Starting on pole here is more difficult than other places, but we’ll give it our best shot either way.”
Second, Alex Dunne, Hitech Pulse-Eight:
“Ultimately I’m a bit disappointed to not get pole. I think definitely we had the car and the pace. The pace in practice has been really strong and I think on my best lap I got held up quite a lot and I lost a lot of time, so I think we definitely had the pace for pole. But ultimately I think if there’s ever a track you don’t want to start on pole at it’s here, so I’m pretty happy with P2.
“I just need to focus on getting a good start and getting a good run out of turn one. Hopefully the slipstream can help me out through Eau Rouge and down the Kemmel Straight and we’ll have to see what happens from there. I think that our race pace has been pretty strong as well so I look forward to the race.
“I always knew eventually that we’d be back to where we should be, it was only a matter of time. I think now that the pace has come back, definitely we have the car and 100% have the pace to be on pole today, so I’m really happy with everything we’ve done. The team has worked really hard, so have I, and it’s starting to come together.”
Third, McKenzy Cresswell, Elite Motorsport:
“I don’t think it would have been close, I think I did a 2m14.6 on the final lap but it was red flagged just as I was coming down the pit straight. So it’s difficult to feel happy at the moment, obviously it’s a good result, it’s our highest qualifying yet but I’m not happy in the slightest at the moment.
“I’ve got mixed emotions, I have a very good starting position because I can get a tow up to Les Combes down the Kemmel Straight, which is very advantageous here.
“So far, this is the circuit that we’ve had the most pace at, so that’s the real positive. We were slightly struggling a bit at the first couple of rounds and have been a little bit unlucky here and there, but now we’re starting at the front and in a position to fight for wins so it’s a good step forward.”
