Polish ace Kucharczyk shines with double pole at Silverstone

06 May 2023

Douglas Motorsport’s Tymek Kucharczyk claimed his first two poles in the GB3 Championship, with a stunning performance in the wet at Silverstone.

The Polish youngster was the only driver to lap beneath 2m09s, recording his best time of 2m08.839s on his final flying lap. His second best time of 2m09.141s earned him pole for race two as well.

Kucharczyk was over a quarter of a second clear of the pack, with Rodin Carlin’s John Bennett taking his best qualifying result with second, ahead of Hitech GP’s Alex Dunne in third, with the top three covered by less than three tenths of a second.

Bennett’s teammate Costa Toparis earned his best qualifying result of the season with fourth, while championship leader Joseph Loake took fifth ahead of teammate Matthew Rees. The JHR duo set identical lap times and Rees was a contender for pole throughout, but was one of a number of contenders to lose lap times due to track limits violations.

McKenzy Cresswell was next up for Elite Motorsport, 0.031s away from Rees and 0.046s ahead of Rodin Carlin’s Callum Voisin.

Fortec’s Jarrod Waberski took his best outright qualifying result of the season so far with ninth, with Chris Dittmann Racing’s Zak Taylor completing the top-10.

Rees set the early pace after the first laps with a 2m14.705s and shaved four seconds off that next time around to improve to a 2m10.803, only to lose it due to his first track limits offence.

Next time around he recorded a 2m09.948s, 1.1 seconds ahead of testing pace setter Kucharczyk, though wasn’t able to improve on his fourth lap with the spun car of Daniel Mavlyutov at Brooklands bringing out the red flags.

The session resumed with around eight minutes to go, and it was Kucharczyk who took the initiative after setting overall best times in three of the four sectors. His effort of 2m09.141s put him eight tenths clear of Rees, as the Welshman lost his improved time once more.

With the chequered flag flying Rodin Carlin’s John Bennett took over at the top, but Kucharczyk’s best time came right at the end, a 2m08.839s to claim his first two pole positions in GB3.

The Pole will therefore line-up at the front of the grid for the opening two races of the season, and earns a combined total of £500 as part of the Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup.

The first race of the weekend is due to commence at 14.52, with live timing and streaming available on the GB3 website.
