Kucharczyk claims fastest driver of the weekend award after epic recovery drives

Douglas Motorsport’s Tymek Kucharczyk was one of the stars of the Silverstone weekend, battling back from adversity after qualifying to bank strong points finishes in all three races, and showing supreme race craft too.

An indication of the Polish driver’s pace came in qualifying as he claimed pole position for races one and two, only to lose them due to a technical non-compliance. That instead meant he started from 24th on the grid for the opening two contests and 23rd for the reverse grid finale.

But while chances of victory were almost eliminated, Kucharczyk instead showed he’s a battler. In the first race he gained 10 places from his starting position, despite a spin on the opening lap, and 15 places in both race two and three. That meant he made up 40 places in total across the event, replicating 2022 champion Luke Browning’s drives at the same circuit last summer, when he too lost pole positions and had to start at the back.

If that wasn’t enough, and despite his constant on track battles, Kucharczyk also managed to set the fastest racing lap of the weekend in the final contest, netting him the Sunoco Fastest Driver of the Weekend Award.

“Crazy weekend! Starting at the back of the grid was never going to be easy but we made a good job together with the team and scored some important points” Kucharczyk said.

“The car felt good all weekend. We avoided the other cars crashing out and we had a great last race I think. We had a good first lap and then it was a bit more difficult because the cars were further from each other, but we got the fastest lap and that was pretty good!”

He's now hoping to impress further during the next event at Spa-Francorchamps at the start of June.

“Spa is a similar circuit to Silverstone with a lot of high speed stuff and we are looking forward to it, we will see what we can do there!”
