Kucharczyk regains GB3 championship lead after incident-packed Zandvoort race two

14 July 2024

Hitech Motorsport's Tymek Kucharczyk claimed a superb victory in a drama filled second race of the weekend at Zandvoort, in which his main title rivals hit trouble, to reclaim the championship lead.

After the initial start was red flagged following a multiple car collision off the line, and having made a good start, the Polish driver did it again at the restart to power past JHR Developments' pole sitter and championship challenger John Bennett.

Things were already looking good for the Hitech driver as he pulled away at the front on the first lap, but his title challenge benefited immediately afterwards, as then-championship leader Louis Sharp ended his race in the turn three barriers. Bennett sustained front wing damage at same time and had to pit at the end of the safety car period, necessitated by Sharp's stranded Rodin car.

The race restarted on lap four, and Kucharczyk simply powered into the distance, taking the chequered flag over seven seconds clear after nine laps. Rodin's James Hedley claimed second after starting fourth, but is under investigation, while Elite Motorsport's McKenzy Cresswell claimed third from fifth on the grid.

Colin Queen claimed by far his best result of the season, benefiting from the chaos and some good race craft to go from 12th to fourth, and challenged Cresswell for the last podium spot across the final few laps.

JHR Developments' Patrick Heuzenroeder continued his fine run of form with fifth place ahead of VRD Racing by Arden's Nikita Johnson, who earned his best result of the season so far.

Elite's Jarrod Waberski was seventh having started 17th, ahead of Seb Murray in eighth for Chris Dittmann Racing. Edward Pearson gained nine spots on his way to ninth for Fortec, with Rodin's Arthur Rogeon completing the top-10 despite an early off at Tarzan.

The race was red flagged shortly after the first start after Hugo Schwarze, Gerrard Xie, championship front-runner Will Macintyre and Noah Ping made contact seconds after the lights went out.

After a lengthy delay, the race restarted over a reduced 10 lap, 16-minute affair, based on the original grid line-up, minus the damaged cars.

The third race of the weekend is due to commence at 16.40 local time (15.40 UK).
