Kucharczyk seals second GB3 win of the season in Spa opener

01 June 2024

Hitech Pulse-Eight's pole sitter Tymek Kucharczyk controlled the first race of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, to take his second win of the season in damp conditions at the Belgian Grand Prix venue.

The Polish driver finished 1.8 seconds clear of JHR's John Bennett, with Rodin Motorsport's Louis Sharp taking the final spot on the podium.

Kucharczyk made a strong start at the front of the field, and immediately put himself out of reach for those seeking a tow down to Les Combes.

His lead stood at 1.3 seconds after the first tour, and grew that to as much as 2.3 seconds at the race's mid point. Bennett was able to gain regularly in the first sector, but wasn't able to close the gap enough to launch a late challenge.

Sharp finished just under two seconds clear of teammate Ugo Ugochukwu to grab the final podium spot, and extended his championship lead by three points as a result.

Kucharczyk's teammate Will Macintyre delivered a feisty drive to fifth from eighth on the grid, which included a pass around the outside of Noah Ping La Source on lap six. Ping was still the lead VRD Racing by Arden runner, ahead of Elite Motorsport's McKenzy Cresswell.

Cresswell's teammate Hugo Schwarze was one of the biggest movers of the race as he surged from 12th on the grid to eighth, ahead of series debutant Nikita Johnson in the second VRD Racing by Arden car.

The third Elite car of Jarrod Waberski completed the race-one top-10, with Rodin's Arthur Rogeon missing out on a top-10 finish after picking up a 10 second track limits time penalty.

Johnson's fellow newcomers Kanato Le (Chris Dittmann Racing) and Marcus Luzio (Hillspeed) claimed 12th and 19th positions respectively on their debuts.

The second race of the weekend, with the grid formed by each driver's second fastest qualifying times, is due to commence at 16.39 local time, and with Bennett on pole.
