GB3 race two: Kucharczyk battles past Bennett to double up at Spa

01 June 2024

Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Tymek Kucharczyk battled past John Bennett to take his second successive win at Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday.

The Polish driver made his move before the first of two safety cars, and took his second win of the day with the race ending under neutralised conditions after a late collision.

Bennett held off a restart challenge from Louis Sharp to complete the podium, with the pair going wheel to wheel for several corners before the second safety car period.

With much drier conditions compared to this morning's contest, but with the odd wet patch on track, Bennett held off Kucharczyk on the run to La Source on the first lap, but had to defend on the run to Les Combes, with Sharp threatening to join in too.

After resisting the early challenge, Bennett held a lead of four tenths of a second at the end of the first tour, but Kucharczyk threatened again at the end of the Kemmel Straight on lap two, as the Polish driver moved from one side to the other to try and force a move.

But at the third time of trying, Kucharczyk took advantage of the slipstream to blast around the outside of Bennett into Les Combes. Within seconds, the safety car was deployed, with Patrick Heuzenroeder stopped at turn 12, and the VRD Racing by Arden car of Nikita Johnson also encountering trouble, having run as high as fifth.

The safety car pitted at the end of lap five, and while Kucharczyk looked to break away, his cause was aided by Sharp attempting a move on Bennett up the inside of La Source. While the pair squabbled, contact immediately behind them between Elite's McKenzy Cresswell and VRD Racing by Arden's Noah Ping, who were running fourth and fifth, forced both into retirement at the same corner, and necessitated another safety car.

With just three minutes remaining, the second appearance of the safety car ensured the contest finished under neutralised conditions, with Bennett just about holding on to his second place.

Rodin's Ugo Ugochukwu and Hitech's Will Macintyre were fourth and fifth once more, repeating their results from race one, but it was all change behind thanks to the drama.

Chris Dittmann Racing's Kanato Le climbed from 14th on the grid to sixth during his debut weekend in GB3, finishing ahead of VRD Racing by Arden's Shawn Rashid, who followed him through from 15th to a career best seventh place.

Le's teammate Seb Murray claimed his second top-eight finish of the season by rising from 13th to eighth, ahead of Rodin's Arthur Rogeon and Fortec's Edward Pearson, who completed the top-10 from 18th on the grid.

The final GB3 championship race of the weekend, the top-12 reverse encounter, is due to commence at 13.55 local time (12.55 UK) with Hugo Schwarze set to start from pole.
