What they said: Spa-Francorchamps race three

02 June 2024

Will Macintyre, Gerrard Xie and Noah Ping were the top-three finishers in a dramatic final race of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps. Here's how each driver reacted afterwards.

Winner, Will Macintyre, Hitech Pulse-Eight:
"It’s been a great job by the whole team all weekend, the car felt like a literal rocket ship. That’s six wins in a row now for Hitech!

"We have a lot of respect for each other and before the race we were all talking to our engineers and coaches about what’s going to happen and how we’re going to do it. We did it perfectly, clean, respectable and hard, and that was the main thing. I learned from the safety car restarts and tried to implement my own thing which worked. I thought I was going to get overtaken into Les Combes at the last restart, but it turned out alright in the end!

"I’m really enjoying the European tour so far and we just need to sort qualifying out so I can be up there with Tymek in the first two races."

Second, Gerrard Xie, Hitech Pulse-Eight:
"It’s my first podium of the season, we had a messy qualifying this weekend but it’s good to go home with a trophy.

"I made a driving mistake in the first race and the second I had cooling issues and my engine overheated. But a good way to end the weekend and I’m looking forward to the next one."

Third, Noah Ping, VRD Racing by Arden:
"I haven’t looked at the video but I felt like I was alongside and not given enough room and turned down on. I’m not here to take out people, that’s not how I race but I want to get given room, and yesterday I wasn’t given room when I was alongside and ahead at the apex, so we’ll look at it as a team and I’m sure the stewards will look at it too. But from my point of view I wasn’t given enough room and I was squeezed onto the grass on the entry. There was a little bit of argy bargy so I apologise to Rodin and all the team, I’m not here to take them out, but we’ll just look at the video and see what happened.

"It’s been good, we had pace all weekend, the whole team in the wet and the dry. Shawn was up there in the wet and Nikita did a good job this weekend in qualifying, I don’t know what happened in the race. I think we’re coming to grips with this car. Now that we’ve got a steady group we will be looking forward to hopefully more podiums and a bit less contact."
