GB3 Silverstone test day one: Cresswell charges to top spot with lap record-beating time

19 March 2024

Elite Motorsport’s McKenzy Cresswell was the driver to beat on the first day of GB3 testing at Silverstone, as the Elite Motorsport contender topped the times with a 1m52.489s effort in the second session of the day.

His best lap was three tenths of a second faster than GB3’s official lap record around the British Grand Prix, and six tenths quicker than the best recorded qualifying lap, though it fell short of the 1m52.072s lap he registered in pre-season testing last year.

Cresswell was over three tenths of a second clear of the field, and also topped the final session of the day. His nearest challenger was JHR Developments’ Patrick Heuzenroeder, who delivered his best effort in session four, 0.354s away from Cresswell’s overall best, and a tenth of a second clear of the second Elite car of Jarrod Waberski, another to set their best lap late on.

Donington Media Day pace-setter Louis Sharp was fourth for Rodin Motorsport, and also set his best lap in session four, as did JHR’s John Bennett, who was fifth.

Just 0.013s further back was the second Rodin car of McLaren junior Ugo Ugochukwu, thanks to his session three time, with VRD Racing by Arden’s Nikita Johnson seventh and 0.009s clear of teammate Noah Ping.

Hitech Pulse-Eight duo Will Macintyre and Tymek Kucharczyk completed the top-10, with laps set in session three and two respectively, and were the final drivers within a second of the outright pace.

Testing resumes tomorrow, before the field heads to Oulton Park next week for the first race of the new season.
