Zak O’Sullivan claimed his first FIA Formula 2 victory in the feature race at Monaco on Sunday, capping off a superb weekend for GB3 alumni, with two other drivers claiming trophies in the principality.
O’Sullivan’s triumph came after going long in his first stint, having started 15th, and was in perfect position to capitalise when a late Virtual Safety Car period was called.
Emerging from his pit stop just ahead of Isack Hadjar, the 2021 GB3 champion held off a thrilling late challenge to take victory in just his 10th F2 race.
“I didn’t think it was on the cards after a tricky qualifying,” O’Sullivan said afterwards. “We had a few issues. I am really happy. The pace was quite strong through the race, still good enough for a top 10. Of course, the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) at the end really helped us out and eventually gave us the win. I think it is a great result for the team. We have had a tricky start to the year, it’s a big boost."
O’Sullivan wasn’t the only Williams F1 junior to earn silverware, as 2022 champion Luke Browning took third in Sunday’s FIA Formula 3 Feature race, just behind O’Sullivan’s fellow 2021 alumni Christian Mansell.
Oliver Bearman also earned a strong F2 result with fourth in the Feature Race.
2023 GB3 graduate Joseph Loake enjoyed his best F3 event yet for Rodin Motorsport, securing eighth place on the grid in qualifying, easily his best result of the season, and banking fifth and ninth place finishes in both contests.
