Brands Hatch Preview: Who can break the Aussie stranglehold at the top of GB3?

21 August 2025

The GB3 Championship fight resumes at Brands Hatch this weekend, with a big pack of F1 wannabes taking on one of the world’s most legendary track layouts.

A total of 21 drivers will take on the challenges of the iconic Grand Prix circuit, with this weekend’s event being the first time the new Tatuus MSV GB3-025 cars will have raced at Brands Hatch. It’s a pivotal event too, with the season reaching the three quarters stage at the end of racing on Sunday.

In an ultra-competitive field with nine different winners from the opening 15 races, Rodin Motorsport’s Alex Ninovic holds the advantage heading into the event. The Australian driver has been hugely impressive so far this season, winning four races at Zandvoort, Spa-Francorchamps, the Hungaroring and last time out at Silverstone, and holds a 39-point buffer at the top of the standings, more than a race win equivalent.

In an Aussie-dominated top end of the field, Xcel Motorsport’s Patrick Heuzenroeder is his nearest rival. The sophomore contender, driving for one of the series’ new teams for 2025, was a winner at Zandvoort and has added further podiums to maintain his own title push.

Next up is Ninovic’s teammate Gianmarco Pradel, the third Aussie at the sharp end of the field. With wins at the Hungaroring and Silverstone, Pradel’s charge has ignited in recent rounds, and he’s been a constant presence towards the front of the grid.

The driver perhaps best poised to break into the top-three at present is Hitech TGR’s Keanu Al Azhari. The Emirati has stood on the podium four times across the past six races, and earned a breakthrough win last time out at Silverstone.

Elite Motorsport’s Will Macintyre also can’t be counted out, with wins to his name last year and one so far with the new machinery in 2025. He’s the top Brit in this year’s field with nine races to go, and there’s still time for him to gain momentum in the title chase.

Hitech’s reigning British F4 champion Deagen Fairclough is next up, and after a difficult European tour, was back at the sharp end of the field at Silverstone, so expect more of the same here.

JHR’s Noah Lisle is equal on points with Fairclough, and a treble podium finisher so far, and has shown enough pace to keep him in the mix.

Argenti with Prema’s Reza Seewooruthun has enjoyed a big upturn of form in recent rounds, including his decimating win at the Hungaroring, and is just a point further behind.

Lisle’s JHR teammate Kai Daryanani has earned two podiums so far this campaign, and was a race winner at Brands Hatch in GB4 just a couple of years ago.

Seewooruthun’s teammate Lucas Fluxa completes the top-10 heading into the Brands Hatch weekend and sits just a point behind Daryanani.

Freddie Slater makes a return to the series this weekend with Hillspeed. The British sensation is the current leader of the Formula Regional European Championship and has won three of his six GB3 races so far in 2025, the most recent of which came from 23rd on the grid at Spa!

Reigning F1 Academy champion Abbi Pulling enjoyed a return to form at Silverstone last time out, more of the same will surge her into the top-10 in the standings, while Hillspeed’s Kanato Le, like teammate Slater, a Spa winner, also returns this weekend.

Hitech’s Nikita Johnson is another returnee, the American has made his FIA F3 debut since he last raced in GB3 at Spa, while Xcel’s Jack Sherwood has shown top-10 potential on numerous occasions so far this year and knows Brands Hatch very well.

The third Hillspeed entrant of Hiyu Yamakoshi is yet another returnee to the grid, while Elite’s Flynn Jackes came close to a breakthrough podium in Hungary.

VRD’s Enzo Tarnvanichkul made his series comeback at Silverstone and the Red Bull junior was straight into the top-10, while Jackes’ teammate Bianca Bustamante has grown in both speed and confidence as the season has progressed.

Finally, Mexican siblings Patricio and Rodrigo Gonzalez team up at VRD Racing to complete this weekend’s line-up, having made their series debuts last time out, with younger brother Rodrigo switching to the team for the rest of the year.

This weekend’s action commences with testing on the Indy circuit on Friday, before a single 15-minute practice session on Saturday morning at 9am. The ever-dramatic double qualifying session follows at 11.05, with the first session forming the race one grid, which starts at 14.45 on Saturday.

Two more races then follow on Sunday, with the grid for race two (11.30) formed by the fastest times in second qualifying, before the reverse grid finale at 16.10, which features a top-12 reversal from the combined order of qualifying.

All of this weekend’s action can be followed via the official GB3 Championship website www.gb-3.net, with all the races streamed live with full coverage before and after each contest.
