Multiple 2025 GB3 race-winning squad Hillspeed has confirmed the signing of South Korean driver Michael Shin for this coming weekend’s visit to the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit.
The 20-year-old, from Seoul in South Korea, has experience of the previous generation GB3 car back in 2023 and since that time he has raced in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, Formula Regional Oceania, Eurocup-3 and Euroformula Open.
Presently, Shin competes full-time in Euroformula Open where he is third in the driver standings following the most recent event at Circuit Paul Ricard in France. So far this season he has achieved two race wins and six other podiums.
Shin only began racing at any level following the Covid 19 pandemic, making his debut straight into cars by racing Formula 4 in the United Arab Emirates at the age of 17. He then set out on a rapid rise up the single-seater ladder.
Hillspeed has enjoyed a successful part season in GB3 so far, with four race wins already. During the year's curtain-raiser at Silverstone back in April, things couldn’t have begun much better for the team with Freddie Slater dominating qualifying to take pole position for the first two races, converting each into lights-to-flag victories and also securing a new lap record.
At Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium in June, Hillspeed enjoyed a remarkable one-two finish in round nine of the season when Slater put together an incredible win from the back of the grid on a drying track. Kanato Le finished second with a similarly excellent drive, making it a hat-trick of podiums for the weekend having been third in round seven and taking his maiden GB3 win in round eight.
Michael Shin said: “I am delighted to be joining Hillspeed and returning to the GB3 Championship for the Silverstone round. The team has delivered strong performances this season so I am very much looking forward to getting on track and seeing what we can do together. In addition, the new car and the introduction of the DRS system make this opportunity all the more interesting.”
Richard Ollerenshaw, Hillspeed Team Principal said: “We really are delighted to sign Michael to the team for this weekend’s visit to Silverstone GP, and we’re all looking forward to working with him and seeing what we can achieve together. Both GB3 outings so far this year for us have been very successful, so we’re aiming high again for the trip back to Silverstone. Obviously this will be Michael’s first race weekend in the new GB3 car, but he’s a very good driver and I’m sure will be up to speed in no time.”
