2023 GB3 runner-up Alex Dunne delivered a stunning performance on his FP1 debut with McLaren on Friday, with the Irishman posting the fourth quickest time during his first taste of F1 weekend experience.
Dunne, the current F2 championship leader, hopped into Lando Norris' MCL39 car fresh from topping the F2 practice session earlier in the day, and transferred that speed immediately over to F1 machinery.
Starting the hour long session by conducting aero work for the team, Dunne was able to do qualifying simulations on soft tyres later in the session, and brought his pace down quickly.
His best time of 1m05.766s was less than a quarter of a second away from the outright pace, set by Mercedes George Russell, and was just 0.069s off championship leading teammate Oscar Piastri, who was third fastest.
Having declared it "the best day of my life" on the team radio on the lap back to the pits, Dunne will now reset with F2 returning to his radar for the rest of the weekend.
