Zandvoort qualifying: Aussies rule as Heuzenroeder and Ninovic secure GB3 poles with lap record beaters

17 May 2025

Xcel Motorsport's Patrick Heuzenroder and Rodin Motorsport's Alex Ninovic claimed pole positions for the first two GB3 Championship races of the weekend at Zandvoort.

Heuzenroeder secured race one pole with a 1m30.041s, while Ninovic broke the GB3 lap record in qualifying two, setting a 1m29.894s midway through the 15-minute session. Hitech TGR's Deagen Fairclough qualified second for both races.

Qualifying One - Heuzenroeder hurries to race one pole

Heuzenroeder claimed his first GB3 pole position with a qualifying lap record-breaking effort in Q1 at the Dutch Grand Prix venue, which is also the first pole for Xcel in GB3.

The Australian registered a 1m30.041s to break the previous benchmark, just before a red flag was flown with five minutes remaining when teammate Jack Sherwood, who was third at the time, crashed at turn two.

Upon the restart, no one was able to beat Heuzenroeder’s time, with Hitech TGR’s Deagen Fairclough qualifying on the front row for the first time in GB3, but almost four tenths behind.

Rodin duo Ninovic and Gianmarco Pradel qualified third and fourth for race one, and were separated by just one thousandth of a second ensuring three Australian contenders filled the top-four places.

Argenti with Prema's testing pace setter Reza Seewooruthun continued his strong form at Zandvoort by qualifying fifth, easily his best qualifying result so far, and 0.039s clear of JHR Developments' Kai Daryanani, who went one better than his Silverstone efforts.

The second Argenti with Prema car of Yuanpu Cui was seventh quickest, also his best result yet, with de facto championship leader Noah Lisle eighth for JHR Developments.

Hitech TGR's Keanu Al Azhari was just six thousandths of a second behind in ninth, while VRD Racing's Hugo Schwarze registered his first top-10 qualifying result of the season. The top-10 was covered by 0.858s.

For causing the red flag, Sherwood's times from the session were deleted - his effort of 1m30.727s would have put him fifth on the race one grid.

Qualifying Two –Ninovic earns first GB3 pole with lap record time

The second 15 minute session was green throughout, and with lighter fuel loads, Ninovic was the first driver to beat the time set in Q1. His 1m29.894s effort was set with six minutes remaining, breaking the outright GB3 Zandvoort lap record.

That effort remained unbeaten despite a flurry of late times, with Fairclough less than a tenth of a second behind on this occasion, and Heuzenroeder third, 0.021s further back.

Seewooruthun moved up a position compared to his Q1 effort, while Hitech TGR's Nikita Johnson, only 11th in the first session, blasted up the order to fifth in Q2.

Cui was three thousandths of a second behind in sixth as the Chinese driver improved on his Q1 effort, with Lisle next up ahead of Pradel, only eighth this time around.

Schwarze moved up a place to start race two ninth ahead of Al Azhari. The top-10 in Q2 were covered by an even tighter margin of 0.547s, with the top-13 covered by little over a second.

The first race of the weekend is due to commence at 16.25 local time (15.25 UK).
