The 2025 GB3 Championship reaches its finale at Monza this weekend (16-19 October), with plenty of scores to be settled at the iconic ‘Temple of Speed’.
Rodin Motorsport’s Alex Ninovic achieved the rare feat of winning the title a full round early at Donington Park just over a week ago, but behind him, there’s still a lot to fight for at one of the world’s most famous racing venues.
All-conquering Ninovic eyes more records
The 18-year-old Australian may have claimed the title at the earliest point in the GB3 era, with the highest number of wins in a season (eight) and the greatest number of pole positions (eight), but he still needs to score 89 points more to set a new record in the GB3 era. Zak O’Sullivan won the title in 2021 with a tally of 535 points, with Ninovic currently on 446. He’s not yet scored 89 in a weekend, but came close with 84 last time out at Donington Park!
Ninovic could also secure the title with the biggest margin in the GB3 era. He has a lead of 113 points heading into Monza, with O’Sullivan the champion with the biggest gap to second place (154 points). But closest pursuer Patrick Heuzenroeder has been wiped out of contention in the last two reverse grid races, and is determined to trim the gap this weekend.
The battle for runner-up
Talking of Heuzenroeder, Ninovic’s countryman currently has a 33-point advantage in the race to be runner-up in this year’s standings, with Rodin’s Gianmarco Pradel currently filling an all-Australian top-three. With 102 points to fight for this weekend, anyone from Keanu Al Azhari and upwards can still mathematically take second place, with six drivers entered for the event therefore still in with a chance.
Drivers still with a chance of finishing second: Heuzenroeder, Pradel, Deagen Fairclough (Hitech), Reza Seewooruthun (Argenti with Prema), Noah Lisle (JHR Developments) and Al Azhari (Hitech).
The fight for Super Licence points
Ninovic’s triumph this season means he will add 10 Super Licence points to his career tally, as he moves up the ladder towards F1. A total of 40 Super Licence points must be accrued in order to qualify for a Super Licence, and Ninovic therefore already has a quarter of what he needs courtesy of his year in GB3.
The top-five drivers in GB3 all earn Super Licence points, and aside from Ninovic, there’s still several drivers in contention to earn points of their own. In fact, all drivers from Abbi Pulling upwards can still add points to their tallies if they break into the championship top-five, with nine drivers still in contention.
Drivers still with a chance of earning Super Licence Points: Heuzenroeder, Pradel, Fairclough, Seewooruthun, Lisle, Al Azhari, Lucas Fluxa (Hillspeed), Kai Daryanani (JHR) and Abbi Pulling (Rodin).
Any new winners?
Even with Ninovic’s control over the championship, the 2025 campaign has already produced the most different race winners across the past three seasons with a total of 11 already, following Fluxa’s race three triumph at Donington Park and Enzo Tarnvanichkul’s victory for VRD at Brands Hatch.
Should we get two more new winners this weekend, then the record of 13 (2022) will be matched. In the top-10, Fairclough and Lisle are yet to win, but have claimed five and four podiums respectively. Daryanani, Pulling, Jack Sherwood (Xcel) and Bart Harrison (JHR) are others with podiums to their name, but still eyeing a victory.
One more podium needed to equal a record
A staggering 20 drivers have already claimed podiums in GB3 this year, and just one more contender needs to claim a top-three finish at Monza to equal the record of 21 different drivers on the podium, reached in 2022. Drivers targeting a first trophy of the year this weekend include Elite’s Flynn Jackes and Bianca Bustamante, VRD’s Gonzalez brothers Rodrigo and Patricio, and Xcel’s Kabir Anurag.
Newcomers looking to shine
Four drivers make their GB3 debuts or returns this weekend. Argenti with Prema’s August Raber is back after making his debut at Silverstone in August, while Hillspeed welcomes two new names to the series in the form of German Maxim Rehm and Chinese Zhenrui ‘Newman’ Chi, who races under an Italian licence. Both have experience at the circuit courtesy of their year in Italian F4, with Chi taking a victory at the venue back in June.
Then there’s GB4 runner-up Isaac Phelps, who makes an immediate step up to GB3 with Elite Motorsport after a superb season with the squad in MSV’s entry level category, finishing just 11 points away from the championship winner.
