Hitech TGR's Deagen Fairclough claimed his first GB3 win in a thrilling race two at Monza, holding off champion Alex Ninovic in a hugely dramatic contest that featured multiple safety car appearances and frantic racing between the leading contenders.
Fairclough started fourth on the grid but fought for the lead instantly at the first chicane, being edged onto the grass as pole sitter Ninovic and front row starter Noah Lisle went wheel to wheel. All three took to the run off area at turn one, with Lisle leading from Fairclough, while Patrick Heuzenroeder and Reza Seewooruthun tangled at the exit, with the latter making further contact with Hillspeed's Newman Chi, with all three eliminated on the spot and the safety car deployed.
Despite several stranded cars, the race resumed at the end of lap two with Lisle and Ninovic going wheel to wheel on the approach to turn one. Both locked up and took to the escape road, with Ninovic rejoining behind Fairclough in third, but the lead changed hands seconds later at Curva Grande as Fairclough powered past Lisle.
The safety car was deployed again seconds later with JHR's Bart Harrison stranded in the gravel at the first chicane after contact with Isaac Phelps, while there was further drama on the approach to the first Lesmo, as seventh-placed Kabir Anurag squeezed Hillspeed's Maxim Rehm onto the grass, with the German brushing the barrier and retiring to the pits with damage.
After another quick recovery process, the race resumed again after the fourth lap and Fairclough made an excellent restart to hold a clear lead at turn one, as Ninovic passed Lisle for second. Lisle was then further demoted to fourth at the approach to Ascari, as Rodin's Gianmarco Pradel replicated a move he pulled off on Fairclough in race one.
But before the lap was complete, the safety car was called for again, as Argenti with Prema's returnee August Raber skidded off the road into the barriers at the Parabolica.
Following two more neutralised laps, Fairclough made another good restart with eight minutes remaining but Ninovic was able to get into his tow down to the first chicane, and the pair went wheel to wheel once more. Fairclough took to the escape road, while Ninovic cut the second part of the chicane. Fairclough allowed Ninovic through into the lead at Curva Grande, with Pradel also looking to join in the fun.
Pradel passed Fairclough around the outside of the Parabolica to move into second place, but only briefly as Fairclough re-passed the Australian at the entry to the first chicane. Then, in what proved a decisive move, Fairclough passed Ninovic for the lead around the outside of the first part of the second chicane.
As Pradel then passed Ninovic for second, Fairclough was able to establish a small gap to the squabbling Rodin pair, as Hillspeed's Fluxa in fourth also looked to challenge, only to be demoted back a place by Lisle on the approach to Ascari. That battle was settled once and for all at the Parabolica, as Fluxa nerfed the back of Lisle, with the JHR driver returning to the pits, and Fluxa dropping to 13th.
Starting the penultimate lap, Ninovic, who had moved back past Pradel into second, and Fairclough went into the first chicane side by side yet again, with Fairclough resisting the challenge as Pradel also caught back up.
Onto the final lap, Fairclough had a few car lengths in hand, but Ninovic once more found the tow and appeared to make slight contact with the rear of the Hitech as they rounded the first part of the chicane, with both drivers locking up.
The pair were side by side again on the approach to the second chicane as Ninovic looked for a move around the outside, but Fairclough again held him off. That proved the final attack, as Fairclough just about created enough of a gap around the remainder of the final tour, crossing the line with a margin of 0.278s to Ninovic, as Pradel boosted his hopes of finishing second in the championship with third.
In all the drama, the race's biggest improver was Hitech's Keanu Al Azhari, who rocketed from 20th on the grid to fourth ahead of Rodin's Abbi Pulling, who equalled her best 'main race' finish in fifth.
JHR's Kai Daryanani held off Xcel's Jack Sherwood and Anurag on the run to the line, with Patricio and Rodrigo Gonzalez completing the top-10 for VRD Racing.
The final GB3 race of the weekend and the season is due to commence at 16.50 local time (15.50 UK).
