Rowan Campbell-Pilling says he is excited for the prospect of three successive British rounds in the GB3 Championship, after a “bittersweet” weekend at the Red Bull Ring.
The Xcel Motorsport driver qualified fourth in both qualifying sessions in Austria but fell back in races one and two to finish 14th and eighth respectively. He had crossed the line third in race two but dropped to eighth after being handed 15 seconds of track limit penalties.
“The pace has been there in abundance,” said Campbell-Pilling. “The races weren’t how we wanted them to go, which is a negative, but also the positive from that is that I probably learnt more that weekend about the car, the longevity of the tyre and the degradation than I have all season so far.”
Campbell-Pilling conceded that he had some “fine tuning to do before Silverstone” but is in a confident mood to be returning home for the second half of the season.
“It’s flown by really,” he said. “It’s been an awful lot of learning but every time we have made a mistake, we’ve come back from it stronger.”
The Sheffield-native enjoyed his best weekend of the season so far during the Silverstone season-opener in April, securing two fifths and a seventh at the circuit.
“It’ll be great to have so many home races,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it. It will be the same approach as we have been taking all year: working hard behind the scenes, turning up to the track, executing it well and seeing where we are from there.”
Campbell-Pilling said that driving the Tatuus MSV GB3-025 around the Silverstone circuit is “great fun” and is excited to do so again next weekend.
“It’s an incredibly fun car with an awful lot of downforce and power,” he said. “Whether it is in the wet or the dry, it definitely keeps you on your toes. It’s great fun and looking forward to seeing what we can do there.”
