Nikita Bedrin and Deagen Fairclough claimed the two pole positions on offer in qualifying at Donington Park this morning.
VRD's Bedrin took race one pole with what was then the fastest ever GB3 lap at the circuit, only for Hitech's Fairclough to better that effort in an interrupted second session for the race two grid.
Q1 - Bedrin narrowly beats Fairclough
The championship leader beat Fairclough to race one pole by 0.056s, with his time of 1m20.324s enough to take his sixth pole of the season.
The Italian went to the top of the times with five minutes to go, and Fairclough was unable to beat the benchmark, but ran him very close.
The top-two were in a class of their own, with Fairclough, who had been fastest in all six pre-event test sessions, 0.311s clear of Rodin Motorsport's Martin Molnar, who continued his run of qualifying inside the top five in every session this season.
Molnar was the lead Rodin Motorsport runner, with team-mates Abbi Pulling and Maxim Rehm lining up fourth and fifth respectively. Pulling's best lap came right at the last possible moment, with Rehm 0.027s further back.
The German headed a group of six drivers to qualify within a tenth of a second, with 0.083s separating Rehm in sixth and Elite Motorsport's Kyuho Lee in 10th.
Local driver Rowan Campbell-Pilling was the lead Xcel Motorsport driver in sixth, with the top Elite Motorsport contender Flynn Jackes 0.019s behind him in seventh.
The second Xcel of championship contender Lucas Fluxa was 0.020s further back in eighth, just six thousandths of a second clear of Arden Motorsport's Leon Wilson in ninth. Lee rounded out the top-10, 0.003s behind Wilson.
The top-10 was covered by less than seven tenths of a second, with the top-14 all within one second of Bedrin's time.
Q2 - Fairclough steals pole in interrupted session
Having missed out on race one pole, Fairclough made sure of pole position in the second session, but had to contend with two separate red flag periods.
The bulk of the best times came after the first red flag, caused when Aurelia Nobels stopped exiting Coppice. In a short spell of green flag running afterwards, Fairclough blasted to a 1m20.107s just before the red flags flew again after teammate Jacob Micallef crashed out, making light contact with the barriers.
It was close again between the top-two, with Fairclough 0.069s ahead of Bedrin, and the duo 0.449s clear of third place this time, with Molnar their nearest challenger again.
Arden's Wilson secured his best ever GB3 qualifying result with fourth, and only 0.051s away from Molnar, with Rehm fifth again in Q2, just under a tenth of a second further back.
Fluxa was the lead Xcel runner in the second session, 0.011s ahead of Micallef, who was seventh quickest despite his session-ending off.
VRD's Patricio Gonzalez was fastest before the red flags, before being shuffled down to eighth, with Hillspeed's Peter Bouzinelos and Xcel's Campbell-Pilling completing the top-10, which was covered by 0.956s.
The first race of the weekend, with the grid set by the Q1 result, is due to start at 15.10 BST.
